Tips for Finding Your Dream Dress

Dec 01 2015

One of the most important (and one of the most fun) steps in your wedding planning process is finding the dress of your dreams! Your dress, along with the venue, is the main element in setting the tone of your wedding. Once you have your dress, you have your vision of yourself on your special day, and the other details fall into place. Sometimes this process comes easily. It may be the first wedding dress you try on! Other times the process can be more difficult and sometimes overwhelming, especially if there are different silhouettes you enjoy on yourself. But that’s what we’re here for! We’re here to make this step in your wedding planning process as exciting and stress-free as possible; from the time you walk in the door, to the time you’re picking up your dress ready to get married! Here are some of our top tips to keep in mind when on the hunt for your dream dress.

1. Research gown styles
Look through Pinterest, browse some designer websites, have an idea of what you may like and what you don’t like. You don’t need to know all the information (that’s what we’re here for), but it’s helpful to have an idea of different silhouettes and styles. HOWEVER- we can’t stress this enough- keep an open mind! Try on every silhouette at least once. Once you have dresses on, you may feel completely different about it. It is perfectly normal to fall in love with a gown that you never would have pictured yourself in. We see it happen all the time. You don’t know for sure until you try!

2. Know what looks good on you
You’ve never tried on wedding gowns before, so you may not know what silhouette will look best on you. But you do know your style, your type of clothing, what’s “you”. Don’t lose sight of that when looking at bridal gowns. Most likely, you have an idea of some favorite features that you hope your dress will accentuate. Be open about these with your consultant to make it easier for them to pick dresses that will flatter the features you want.

3. Start early
Bridal gowns can take over 6 months to come in. Our special order designers can take anywhere from 4 to 10 months to come in. If you start early, you stress less and leave time for the alteration process. We recommend about a year in advance to leave time for your fittings which start 6-8 weeks before the wedding. Fit is everything! It is the single most important factor for you to look and feel amazing.

4. Trust your instincts
Not everyone will cry and have a tearful moment when they find “the one”. Every bride is going to have a different reaction! Some cry, some laugh, some start to panic and sweat, some are very matter-of-fact- “yup, this is it”. The most important things to ask yourself are: does it make you feel beautiful? Does it make you excited to get married? Does it make you feel special? If yes to all and you love it, chances are it is the one. If you’re not 100% convinced, don’t buy it. But be open about your hesitations; whether it’s fit, money, or a particular part of the dress. We will always try to help to the best of our ability.

5. Set a budget
No matter who is paying for the dress; figure out your budget ahead of time. Once shopping, be aware of the price of dresses you’re trying on. Don’t try things on over your price point “just for fun”. It’s no fun to fall in love with a dress that you can’t have, but if you have a little wiggle room and you’re willing to go a little over budget, go for it! Keep in mind that higher price means higher quality, and your gown is going to be in your wedding photographs forever. If you fall in love with two dresses and one is $500 dollars cheaper, ask yourself which one you would choose if they were both the same price. Whether you spend $2,000 on your dress or $2,500, it’s still a lot of money. Get the one that you can’t get out of your head. If it means cutting back on “nice to haves” to get the dress you really want- don’t hesitate.

6. Only buy from an authorized retailer
Don’t buy from the internet. There are a lot of scams out there claiming to get you designer gowns at insanely low prices. If it seems too good to be true, it is. We’ve seen it before!

7. Enjoy it!

Finding your dream dress is supposed to be fun, so enjoy it! Don’t sweat the small stuff. Remember the big picture- you’re marrying the love of your life! How you feel is actually more important than how you look. The first thing your fiancé is going to look at is your face. If you feel like a million bucks, it’s going to radiate. You’re wedding day marks the beginning of forever for the two of you, that’s the most important thing!
